Die Heilstätten Grabowsee blicken auf eine ebenso faszinierende wie bewegte Geschichte zurück. Gegründet im Jahr 1896 durch das Deutsche Rote Kreuz, gehörte sie zu der ersten Lungenheilstätte in der norddeutschen Tiefebene. Damals galt die frische Luft als wichtigste Therapie gegen Tuberkulose – und Grabowsee wurde zu einem Experiment: Konnte Heilung auch fernab von Bergen und Meer gelingen?

In den folgenden Jahrzehnten entwickelte sich die Anlage stetig weiter. Nach dem Ersten Weltkrieg übernahm die Landesversicherungsanstalt Brandenburg die Einrichtung und baute sie aus. Die Heilstätte wurde zu einem bedeutenden Ort der medizinischen Versorgung – ruhig gelegen, umgeben von Wald und Wasser, fast wie eine eigene kleine Welt.

Mit dem Ende des Zweiten Weltkriegs begann ein völlig neues Kapitel. Ab 1945 nutzte die sowjetische Armee das Gelände als Militärlazarett. Über Jahrzehnte hinweg blieb der Ort für die Öffentlichkeit unzugänglich und wandelte sich von einem Ort der Heilung zu einem streng abgeschirmten militärischen Bereich.
Erst nach dem Abzug der Truppen Anfang der 1990er-Jahre wurde das Gelände wieder freigegeben – doch eine neue Nutzung blieb aus. Seitdem verfällt die einstige Heilstätte langsam. Heute üben die verlassenen Gebäude mit ihrer Mischung aus Verfall, Geschichte und stiller Natur eine besondere Faszination aus – ein Ort, der Vergangenheit atmet und gleichzeitig Raum für neue Geschichten lässt.

Die Heilstätten sind rund um die Uhr bewacht und können nach Absprache offiziell besichtigt werden.

The Grabowsee sanatorium look back on a history that is as fascinating as it is eventful. Founded in 1896 by the German Red Cross, it was among the first pulmonary sanatorium in the North German lowlands. At the time, fresh air was considered the most important therapy for tuberculosis—and Grabowsee became something of an experiment: could healing succeed even far from the mountains or the sea?
In the decades that followed, the site continued to develop steadily. After the First World War, the Landesversicherungsanstalt Brandenburg (Brandenburg State Insurance Institution) took over the facility and expanded it. The sanatorium became an important center of medical care—quietly situated, surrounded by forest and water, almost like a world of its own.
With the end of the Second World War, an entirely new chapter began. From 1945 onward, the Soviet Army used the site as a military hospital. For decades, the area remained inaccessible to the public and transformed from a place of healing into a strictly restricted military zone.

It was only after the withdrawal of the troops in the early 1990s that the site was reopened—yet no new purpose was established. Since then, the former sanatorium has slowly fallen into decay. Today, the abandoned buildings, with their blend of deterioration, history, and quiet nature, hold a unique fascination—a place that breathes the past while leaving space for new stories.

The sanatorium grounds are monitored around the clock and can be officially visited by prior arrangement.
