Müllschwelbrennanlage (SBA) Fürth
(abgerissen/demolished)
English Version: "Upon a block of houses he sits wide. The wind encamps all black around his brow [...]. At evening glows the ruddy gut of Baal, The greatest cities kneel to him like choirs." (Auszug aus "Der Gott der Stadt", Georg Heym (Excpert from "The God of the City" by G. Heym))

The garbage incineration plant (shortened as "SBA", Germ.: Schwelbrennanlage) in the city of Fürth was a multi-million DM (German Mark) pilot project by the company Siemens which turned out to be a giant failure after its completion in 1997. This is why the plant was already shut down in the following year.
Since its beginning (construction works started in 1994) the project had been highly controversial among the local population and the Bund für Naturschutz, a German environmental organization. Thus, many protests were organized against the project, which was really ill-fated from its very start. Consequently, only after a short time in operation and after several yet minor problems which occurred now and then, a major failure including toxic gas leak took place in August 1998. In total 73 people got injured as a direct consequence of that accident. After that failure the plant has never been taken in operation again.
Since its closure the plant has been left unused for two decades - expect for occasional fire drills.
